How I Trick My Brain to do Hard Things?-Dopamine Detox

Hey guys, If I tell you to scroll your news feed for an hour or two, you’ll be able to do that without even knowing the time. And after two hours you might be like, “Oh, Two hours are over, I thought it’s just 20 minutes?”. While if I ask you to read a book or work on building a side hustle. Your reaction will definitely be the opposite. Why does this happen? Even though you know that reading a book will be much more beneficial than scrolling your news feed. The answer to this question isn’t much complicated. Our brain seeks Instant Gratification. When we do something we like our brain treats us with Dopamine. A neurotransmitter which makes use feel good. Since we don’t get any instant benefit after reading books we prefer scrolling.

Now let’s talk about why is Dopamine important. In short, Dopamine is the motivation for us to do anything. Let’s understand it with an example. Once scientists conducted a test on rats(maybe guinea pigs). They took out all the Dopamine from the rat’s brain. After that they didn’t even move, they were just lying like dead. They didn’t move to eat even though they were hungry. Because they didn’t have the motivation to move and eat. So if we don’t get Dopamine our situation will be something similar. We even get Dopamine for drinking water.

Now Dopamine can be dangerous for the same reason. It also motivates us to keep up our bad habits. Bad habits are a topic for another day. Now let’s talk about the problem with too much Dopamine. Since we all use the internet every day we get flooded with lots of Dopamine. If you’re thinking “How can that be harmful”? It’s harmful because of Homeostasis. Homeostasis is a biological system that helps us to adapt to our surroundings. For example, when we feel cold we start shivering to generate heat and when it’s hot we start sweating to keep our body temperature normal. But Homeostasis can’t solve all problems like this. So it keeps balance by adapting. For example,

If you drink for the first time you’ll get drunk faster then a regular drinker. Because a regular drinker’s body builds tolerance against alcohol. So little alcohol can’t make him drunk.

The same happens with Dopamine. If we get flooded with a high level of dopamine like this. We build tolerance against Dopamine. This means works that give us little Dopamine doesn’t turn us on anymore. Like reading books, studying, starting your dream business, etc. In short, anything that doesn’t give us or gives us little dopamine.

You might say, “So What? I’ll force myself to do works.” or “What?” But it’s a problem because day by day we’ll turn into those motivationless rats. We won’t feel like doing anything then YouTube or Facebook.

Solution

Now, what’s the way to get out of this. It’s Dopamine Detox or you can also call it Dopamine Fast. Now how to perform a Dopamine Detox? There are two ways you can do it. I’ll break down both of those.

Weekly

Select a day form like for Dopamine Detox. That day you’ll avoid everything that can flood you Dopamine. Which means highly stimulating activities. So here are the rules:

You Can’t Do

  • Use the phone(you can make only important calls), computers, tablets, TV. In short any device
  • Listen to music
  • Eat junk food
  • Anything you like to do

You Can Do

  • Read Books (No Fiction is Allowed)
  • Meditate
  • Write
  • Workout

Monthly

This one is a bit extreme. Again select a day of every month. Since your doing it once a month, you can’t do anything that will give you Dopamine. Your goal would be to stay bored. Here are the rules:

You Can’t Do

  • Eat any food
  • Drink water
  • Anything you like to do

You Can Do

  • Read Books (No Fiction is Allowed)
  • Meditate
  • Write

Will it Work?

So the main goal of performing Dopamine Detox is to stay bored. Will just getting bored solve this problem? Yes. Let’s understand with an example:

Suppose you eat a burger every day. Now if I ask you to eat plain rice will you have that? Definitely not. Because that’s not as tasty as a burger. But suppose you’re in a survival situation and haven’t eaten for days. You’ll just eat anything right.

Think about the same story now. Just replace burger with highly stimulating activities and rice with Low stimulating activities. So if you do Dopamine fast, Your brain will get insane to get some Dopamine. If you stay consistent you’ll like any sort of work.
